ALAPPUZHA: Five persons were arrested for attacking a police team, which tried to intervene and break up a brawl in a bar at Cherthala. Four police personnel sustained injuries in the incident.

The arrested have been identified as Panachickal Vijesh, 24, Krishna Prasad, 36, Vipin, 28, Dhanesh, 26 and Aadharsh 25. They have been booked under section 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of Indian Penal Code.

G. Ajith Kumar, SI, Cherthala said that police had been called to a bar on Sunday evening following a fight which erupted between a few people.

“We tried to break up the brawl, but some of them attacked us. Four policemen and one of the attacker sustained injuries in the incident. We have arrested five persons in connection with the attack,” Ajith Kumar said.

Officers injured in the attack include- Grade SI Babu, 50, ASI Sunil, 47, Senior Civil Police Officer Kunjumon, 40 and Civil Police Officer Jaya Mohan, 39.

Ajith Kumar also sustained minor injuries. They were given treatment at Government Taluk Hospital, Cherthala.
