KALPETTA: All steps will be adopted to avoid load-shedding or power cut in the State this year, Electricity Minister M M Mani said.

Speaking after dedicating the largest floating solar project in the country to the nation on the Banasurasagar dam at Padinharethara in Wayanad, Mani said the board could provide power to the public without going in for load-shedding or power cut so far and the government was trying to continue it in the coming months.

As the State meets 70% of its power needs by procuring electricity from neighbouring States, the government would give prominence to utilise non-conventional energy sources to tackle the power crisis. Mr. Mani said construction of 24 mini hydroelectric projects in various parts of the State was under way.

Dearth of land and high investment cost to set up non-conventional power plants were the two major obstacles for setting up such plants in the State, Mani added.

The KSEB has spent Rs 9.25 crore on the project and it will generate 7.5 million lakh units of power a year.

The 54,450 sq ft plant, with 1,938 solar panels, each with a capacity of 260 Watts, has been installed on 18 unique and indigenously developed floating structures.

The 500 kWp (kiloWatt peak) plant is the largest floating solar project to come up in the country. The power produced will be transmitted to the 11 kV line of the KSEB.

The Minister also inaugurated the construction works of a 66 kv substation of the Board at Ambalavayal.
