THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A meeting of the Travancore Devaswom Board on Tuesday decided to recommend to the state government a Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) probe into the charges levelled against former president Prayar Gopalakrishnan and member Ajay Tharayil.

Board president A Padmakumar told reporters here that the board had engaged its vigilance wing to conduct a preliminary investigation into the allegations, including discrepancies in tour diary and awarding of tender for computerisation and civil works.

The inquiry found that they were guilty of the charges and hence the board recommended a VACB probe, Padmakumar said.

A special court here on Tuesday ordered the VACB to conduct a quick verification into the allegation that Gopalakrishnan and Tharayil had indulged in corruption during their tenure on the board.

Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge D Ajith Kumar heard that the two United Democratic Front (UDF) nominees had allocated much more than the sanctioned amount to execute building works, causing colossal losses to the exchequer and corresponding gain to private contractors.

Two former TDB employees, P. Jayakumar and Radhakrishnan Nair, had moved the court against the respondents.

Gopalakrishnan and. Tharayil, who had to step down after the LDF reduced the term of the board, have denied the charges. They said the government was trying to smear them by making false accusations.
