THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday hailed the rescue operations carried out by Coastguard, Navy and Army jointly following Ockhi cyclone. On the other hand, he criticised media in this context.

He turned against media during the press conference held on Wednesday after the cabinet meeting.

“What Kerala witnessed was the biggest tragedy in the recent past. The government is trying to resolve all issues related to it unitedly with single mind. When all people of Kerala, cutting across party lines and with the help of Central forces are trying to bring relief to the victims of calamity, we are let down by the stand taken by certain media groups. They will have to make a soul-searching to find out whether their stand was in tune with the general sentiments of the people,” he said.

The CM said when the cyclone lashed the State, thousands of fishermen were into the deep sea. In the joint operation carried out by Central forces and Coastguard, as many as 2600 people were rescued including 1130 Malayalis

“Such a humungous rescue operation had not happened before in the deep sea. The government is expressing its gratitude to Defence forces. Merchant ships in the sea at that time, other boats and fishermen also joined the rescue operation. Union ministers Nirmala Sitaraman and Alphons Kannanthanam reached Kerala and took an assessment of the situation and consoled the affected people. For that, the State is expressing its special thanks. The government is obliged to take forward with more vigour relief operations. The government also request people from all sections to put in their efforts to resolve problems faced by the victims,” he said.
