KOCHI:  The Ernakulam North Police arrested a person from Vaduthala on charge of cheating a nationalised bank. The authorities at the State Bank of India’s Lissie branch lodged a complaint stating that Jose, 45, of Thrikkukaran house, Vaduthala, had cheated the bank after taking a car loan of Rs 7 lakh by producing fake documents in 2013.

The accused had pledged the vehicle using the help of agents after purchasing it. The documents submitted by the accused that included an identity card, PAN card, bank statement, and IT returns were found to be fake. Efforts by the police to trace the accused had also failed. He was also not using a mobile phone.

The accused later gained the confidence of the manager of a bank in Kakkanad after taking a car loan and repaying it without any default. He came into the radar of the sleuths after he approached the bank seeking a loan of Rs 1 crore. The accused allegedly created documents stating that he owned a company and also came up with fake IT return documents. The police said that nearly 22 similar cases were registered against the accused in various police stations in Ernakulam. The investigating officials are now tracking those who had helped the accused in forging the documents.
