KOZHIKODE: BJP leader P K Krishnadas has alleged that the Chief Minister’s office was attempting to get defeated in cases involving 20 estates, with around 40,000 acres in their possession.

Addressing a news conference here on Thursday, he said the cases involved in disputes with the State government were coming up before the Kerala High Court in January last week.

However, the government lacked detailed information about the cases. Lawyers appearing for the government had been routinely shifted for the past 18 months. Government pleaders abstained from appearing in the court when some cases came up before it. At the same time, the corporates have appointed highly-paid senior civil lawyers to argue their cases.

Krishnadas said that M G Rajamanickam, the former Special Officer appointed by the government to reclaim all illegal land which had been in the possession of various British companies and individuals prior to Independence, had in his report noted that about 5.5 lakh acres of government land were in the possession of corporates. However, the government had sought a report from the Law Secretary that stated that the Rajamanickam report would not stand the test of legal validity, he said. “The upcoming case is a crucial one for the government. If the government fails in this case, it will be difficult to win the case again. If the government did not have the money to appoint good civil lawyers, the BJP will collect the amount for the government,” he said.

He alleged that a lobby involving corporates and land mafia dictated the agenda of the government whether the Congress-led United Democratic Front or the CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front came to power. About 10 lakh hectares of land were in the possession of corporates when the government was struggling to provide land to 3.5 lakh landless people in the state, Krishnadas said, adding that his party would launch an agitation for second land reforms soon.
