KOCHI: Dissidents in Syro Malabar church have formed new organisation in association with believers. The name of the new organisation is Arch DioceMovement For Transperancy. The primary meeting of the organisation was held in Kochi on Friday. The leaders of the new organisation said that public protest will be started if attempts are made to hush up the anomalous land deals of the church.
The allegations was made against Syro Malabar Church Major Arch Bishop Cardinal Mar George Alancherry regarding the sale of church land. A section of rebel priests had alleged that the bishop incurred a heavy loss to the church by selling land in order to repay loans taken from banks.
There was also allegations of tax evasion and black money deal. In the land deals many unlawful things had allegedly happened. Hence a demand was made that Cardinal Mar George Alancherry be kept off the church duties before the matter was investigated by an agency.
An inquiry commission appointed to examine this also found some truth in the allegation. Following this a special committee chaired by Mathew Mulakkad was appointed. The committee comprises five bishops.
The new group of dissidents have come at a time when the believers are awaiting the report of this commission.
The Thrikkakara land, which is mired in controversy, was the one Aleksain priest had handed over to Syro Malabar Church, with the instruction that the land should only be used for charity works. The land worth Rs 100 crore was sold for clearing the debts of about Rs 50 core. But the debt amount rose to Rs 90 crore and the land was also lost to the church. All controversies began after this.
