Chemical leak responsible for Kochi shipyard explosion: CMD

KOCHI: Kochi shipyard CMD Madhu S Nair has said that chemical leak was the reason behind the explosion in the ship at the yard.

Addressing a press meet, he said that a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh has been announced for the family of the deceased.

“The accident took place while changing the steel plates in the tank. Acetylene and oxygen are used to cut through the metallic parts of the tank, and every day we make sure that there is no trace of these chemicals in the tank. Even today morning, we made sure that there was no trace of these chemicals in the tank before changing the plates. Unfortunately, the chemicals started to leak all of a sudden. Pungent odour also emanated before the explosion. This maybe because the acetylene and oxygen could have accumulated at one end of the tank, “he explained.

He has also said that the director of operations has been instructed to probe into the accident, and added that an expert team from Delhi would also be arriving soon in Kochi to investigate the incident.

Madhu Nair also said that they have been handling the maintenance works of Sagar Bhushan since the past 25 years and this accident is the first of its kind.
