THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The LDF meeting on Tuesday recommended to the government to increase the bus charge. The recommendation is to increase minimum charge by Rs 1. With this the minimum charge will go up from Rs 7 to Rs 8 and the fare of the Fast Passenger will go up from Rs 10 to Rs 11. However, there won’t be any change in the concession rate of students.

The cabinet that will meet on Thursday will give approval for the fare hike.

The LDF meeting gave the nod for increasing the fair in the wake of private bus operators announcing strike. In the meeting, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that there was no other go other than increasing the bus fire. Following this, the meeting recommended to the government to go for a hike without overburdening the people.

Justice Ramachandran Samithy had recommended to the government to increase minimum bus charge from Rs 7 to Rs 8.
It was on May 20, 2014 that the bus charge was hiked last. The Transport department’s stand is that the fare hike is unavoidable since the diesel price had shot up. It was in 2011 that students’ minimum charge was raised from 50 paisa to Rs 1.

After LDF meeting, Transport Minister A K Saseendran told media persons that the government would take appropriate decision after weighing the pros and cons of the demand for fare hike.
