KANNUR: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the newly formed Payyanur taluk, the fifth taluk in this district, at a function held at Payyanur Mini Civil Station. Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said the government aims to provide infrastructure development and hassle free governance for the entire development of the state. He said the development works of National Highway and the laying of GAIL pipe line in the State will be completed soon.

Later, chief minister also gave away the second "Deshabhimani award" consists a purse of Rs two lakh to renowned writer T Padmanabhan for his contributions to social and cultural field of the state at a function held at Collectorate Ground here.

The new taluk comprises 22 villages including 16 delinked from the State's biggest taluk ---Thaliparamba taluk and six from the Kannur taluk. The total area covering is 513.52 square Kilo metre and the total population is 3,50,836 according to 2011 senses. Revenue Minister E Chandrasekharan, Port Minister Ramachandran Kadanapally, MP P K Sreemathy, MLAs C Krishnan, T V Rajesh also attended the function.
