THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Triggering fears of yet another round of political clashes, an activist of the BJP was injured after being hacked by a gang near Poojappura on Sunday.

A CPI (M) worker was arrested in connection with the incident. The police identified the victim as R.S. Prasanth of Thamalam. He was allegedly attacked by a five-member gang led by CPI (M) worker Ratheesh of Thamalam at Chullamukku at around 10 a.m. An attempt that was purportedly made by a group led by Prasanth to hoist their party’s flag in the area apparently incensed Ratheesh, who allegedly attacked him using a machete. Having sustained injuries on his right shoulder and hand, Prasanth was admitted to the General Hospital.

Ratheesh was soon apprehended by the Poojappura police and charged under Section 307 (Attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. He has been remanded to judicial custody after being produced at a local court. The police are on the lookout for others alleged to be involved in the incident. The police suspect the incident to be related to a feud that existed between workers of rival parties in the area. Besides, Ratheesh’s brother Santhosh was allegedly murdered by BJP activists a few years ago. In light of the incident, the police have stepped up security in the area to prevent a possible retaliatory attack.
