KOCHI: The police have taken a case on the Syro-Malabar diocese’s Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese land dealing issue making Archbishop Cardinal Mar Geroge Alanchery as the first accused with non-bailable offences slapped on him.

CUSAT St. Johns Church vicar father Joshy Pothuva, vicar general at Archbishop House father Sebastian Vadakkumpadam, real estate broker Saaju Varghese have been made accused two to four in the case.

The HC had earlier ordered to take a case against the Cardinal based on the petition filed by Cherthala native Shine Varghese stating that no case was taken on the complaint filed at the Ernakulam Central Station pointing it out that there are discrepancies in the land dealing of the archdiocese.

The FIR was registered following the legal advice by the advocate general that a case can be taken.

The land in Thrikkakkara that was sold was handed over to the Syro Malabar diocese by the Alexine Priest diocese, on the condition that the land shall only be used for welfare activities.

The land, which is worth about Rs. 100 crores was sold to clear debts of about Rs. 50 crores. But the dealing became a controversy as the debt shot up to Rs. 90 crores and the diocese lost the land.
