NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has ordered that toddy shops along National High Ways could be re-opened after following certain conditions.

The three-member bench comprising Justice Deepak Mishra and Justices DY Chadrachood and Amitav Roy clarified that the order issued earlier giving leniency to re-open liquor shops is also applicable to liquor shops. The government can decide on toddy shops that could be re-opened.

In its order issued on July 11, 2017, the apex court had given concession to National-State high ways passing through Municipal region. Moreover, the government also has the right to denotify roads.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had banned toddy shops also after bringing it under liquor category. Now they have excluded toddy shops from that list.

States including Kerala demanded the concession given to Minicipal regions also for panchayats.
It was the liquor shops in Assam that first moved the court seeking exemption from 500 metre ban. As suggested by the court, Keralam, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal gave affidavit favouring the Assam.

Meanwhile toddy workers criticised Congress leader V M Sudheeran in the court for giving petition against reopening of bars. They alleged that Sudheeran had approached the apex court to build up his image and for his own political gain.
