KOLLAM: The Kundara police arrested Lalkumar, 35, a driver with the KSRTC Adoor depot, in connection with the murder of Muhammad Shafi, 28, of Shafi Manzil in Kureeppally early this week. Muhammad Shafi, an NRI, was visiting his family as his wife had given birth to a baby girl last week.

According to police officials, it was a verbal dispute that led to the murder of Shafi who questioned a gang who consumed alcohol in public. The incident took place on Monday evening when Shafi found some people drinking in a plot near his house.

He allegedly asked them to vacate the plot and left for his house, but the group members brought him back. He was attacked and stabbed on the empty plot and was left there.

Though Shafi was taken to a local hospital later, he was declared brought dead. The other four accused in the case are absconding.
