THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: City Corporation officials evicted those who had set up shops on the walkway encroaching upon the space in front of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple.

But the shopkeepers put up stiff resistance to the eviction move, leading to tension.

Mayor V K Prashant said the action was taken based on complaints from the State Archaeology Department, Kerala Road Fund Board, and residents of the area.

He said the local body would not allow any kind of business activity that encroached upon public roads and created difficulties to the public.

The Corporation is currently in the process of preparing a list of street vendors in the city and providing them identity cards. They will be allocated space in separate vending zones.
