KOCHI:  Four more police personnel, including two assistant sub-inspector-ranked officers, all attached to the Varapuzha police station, have been arraigned as accused in the case over the custodial death of S.R. Sreejith. The accused are ASI Jayanandan, ASI Santosh Baby, and civil police officers Sunil Kumar and Sreeraj.

The charge sheet, booking them for wrongful confinement, has been submitted before the Judicial First Class magistrate court in North Paravur. Jayanandan was in charge of the Varapuzha police station the day the youth was taken into custody.

Sources said all the four accused were present at the Varapuzha station when Sreejith was allegedly tortured at the lock-up here.

The investigators on Thursday took Vipin, Thulasidas and Ajith, accused of attacking C M Vasudevan’s residence at Devaswompadam for evidence collection and recovered some of the weapons used in the attack. The trio intended to kill him, the police said.

In a related development, Sreejith’s family alleged that a policeman had demanded bribe for Sreejith’s release the next day of the arrest. Ranjith S.R., the elder brother of Sreejith, said an amount was handed over to a policeman and it was later returned. “My father handled the transaction. I don’t know the details,” he said. It is alleged that Pradeep Kumar, driver of former North Paravur CI Crispin Sam, demanded the money. Post-allegation, SP (Ernakulam Rural) placed him under suspension pending inquiry.
