THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 20-year-old youth from Alappuzha drowned in the Neyyar, near Mampazhakkara, in the Neyyattinkara police station limits on Sunday afternoon.

The dead was identified as Binoj, 20. He had come to the house of his friend’s wife in the morning, and in the afternoon went for a bath in the river. When his younger brother Dhanoj started drowning, Binoj rushed to his rescue and managed to save him, but in the process lost his life. The body has been shifted to the Neyyattinkara hospital mortuary.

A 19-year-old youth drowned while taking bath in the Karamana River on Sunday afternoon. He has been identified as Vishnu, hailing from Nedumcaud. According to the Karamana police, Vishnu went to the area under the Karamana Bridge with some of his friends in the afternoon. While taking bath, he got caught in the strong currents and was swept away. Though his friends tried to save him, they could not get hold of him.

A 17-year-old youth drowned in the Kallar in the Vithura police station limits on Sunday afternoon.

He was identified as Athul, son of Krishnakumar and Shibha, of Melarannoor, Karamana. Athul was part of an eight-member group of friends on their way to Ponmudi.

They stopped for a bath in the Kallar en route. When Athul fell into a deep portion of the river, his friends raised an alarm. By the time local people arrived, he had drowned. The Fire and Resuce Services were called in to retrieve the body.

In another incident, Manu Radhakrishnan, 26, of Vilas Nagar, Vembanoor, in the Aruvikkara police station limits, went missing after he had gone to take bath in the Aruvikkara reservoir along with three other youths on Sunday afternoon. The Fire and Rescue Services were called in but Manu could not be located. The search will resume on Monday.
