KANNUR: The police have arrested the man who tried to molest a seven-year old girl who was sleeping with her mother on the street after carrying her away. The accused P T Babyraj, a native of Payyanur, was arrested by a special team of police from Salem in Tamil Nadu after tracking his mobile number.

The incident pertaining to the case happened on the night of May 9. The family of the girl has been living near the corporation stadium since the past few years. Though Babyraj carried away the sleeping girl after closing her mouth with his hand, she managed to scream out after a while. The other nomadic families who got alerted surrounded the man and bet him up and left him. Babyraj hurt his head in the attack.

Even while all this was happening, one person from the nomadic group informed the police who promptly arrived at the spot and questioned Babyraj. He told the police that he ended up there accidentally after losing his way, and hurt his head after falling off his Bullet. The police asked him to appear at the police station the next day morning and left him.

The following morning, he approached the nomadic group with a lawyer and offered a cheque of Rs. 50,000 in the name of P T Babyraj to the girl’s father. He also requested them not to tell anyone else about the incident.

Nevertheless, Babyraj went into hiding after the girl’s grandmother informed the Jagratha Committee that is centred on Payyanur town, and that functions under the leadership of DYFI, about the incident. The Jagratha Committee then took the girl and her father to the police and made them file a complaint, following which the police took a case based on POCSO Act after three days. The secret statement of the child has also been recorded in the presence of a magistrate.
