THIRUVANANTAHPURAM: The government has given up the move to amend the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act that will keep urban areas outside its purview. The move follows a strong opposition raised by the CPI. The CPI had earlier made clear its stand on the act.

During the bilateral meeting held in AKG centre also, the CPI had expressed its opposition. The government budged after CPI made the same demand in the high-level committee meeting that ensued.

The move to exclude the urban areas was taken even as the amendment bill was still under the consideration of the cabinet. The government said the move was on account of demands raised from several quarters for reclaiming paddy lands in the urban areas.

The Wetland Act was brought out during the tenure of V S Achuthanandan government. When the Pinarayi government came to power, an amendment was made in the Act in order to facilitate GAIL gas pipeline. The amendment mainly was that paddy fields could be reclaimed for public purposes according to State committee’s recommendation, though local committees denies approval.
