KANHANGAD: The police arrested four people, including the mother of a 13-year-old girl, in connection with a case of sexual abuse of the girl.

The incident came to light after the Class IX student shared her nearly two-year-long ordeal with her teachers who, in turn, lodged a complaint with the Hosdurg police.

The police then arrested the girl’s mother on the charge of abetting the crime in her residence at Ozhinjavalappu at Padannakkad, near Neeleswaram.

They also arrested Ashraf, 45; Assainar, 60, both from the locality; and Babu, 45, an autorickshaw driver at Neeleswaram.

The police are on the lookout for Eramullan, 50.

The arrested had been charged under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and were produced before the District Sessions Court in Kasaragod, entrusted with holding trial in POCSO cases.

Later they were produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court (I) here and were remanded in judicial custody.

A medical examination was held on the girl at the Kasaragod district hospital here. She testified that she was not raped by the accused.

According to the complaint lodged with the Hosdurg and Neeleswaram police stations, the accused used to visit the girl’s residence and sexually abuse her when her mother was present.

The autorickshaw driver reportedly abused the girl when her mother left her in the vehicle and went for shopping.

Following the arrest of the woman, a divorcee, the girl was shifted to the house of her paternal grandmother, the police officer said.
