KOTTAYAM:  The District Police Chief on Tuesday transferred Shinto P Kurian, sub-inspector (SI) at the Kuravilangad police station to the District Crime Records Bureau.

His transfer comes in the wake of allegations that he had got involved in a case concerning the alleged rape of a Catholic nun by Bishop Franco Mulakkal, the head of the Jalandhar diocese of the Catholic Church.

Kurian has been on leave on health grounds and personal reasons ever since the case came before the Kuravilangad police.

However, the police investigating the case of Fr. James Erthayil, who had allegedly contacted a friend of the survivor in the rape case promising land and construction of an exclusive convent for them, had found that Kurian, who has close contacts with the Church, was present at the ashram where Fr. Erthayil had functioned as Prior.

Following this, the police had initiated investigation against Kurian.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the police team that went to Delhi for investigation in the alleged rape case met Bishop Sebastian Vadakkel, head of the diocese of Ujjain.

It was to Bishop Vadakkel that the survivor had complained against Bishop Franco in the initial stages.

However, the police team had not been able to meet the Papal Nuncio in New Delhi. The police were now expected to expand their investigation to Jalandhar.
