CHERUTHONI: Two more shutters have been opened as a decline was not seen even after water from Cheruthoni dam in Idukki was made to flow outside after opening a shutter yesterday.  Second and fourth shutter was opened Friday morning at 7 am. The fourth shutter was raised to 40 cms first and then the second shutter was opened. About 1.20 lakh liters of water is flowing outside in a second. Third shutter was opened yesterday at 12.30 pm. With the opening of the shutters, authorities had directed those staying on the banks of Periyar River to be more vigilant.

Water is flowing in force to Periyar throwing Cheruthoni town following the opening of the dam. No untoward incidents happened as people were shifted to safe places earlier itself. Transportation via Cheruthoni has been banned. District collector Jeevan Babu and revenue team visited Cheruthoni and reviewed safety measures. Low lying areas are fully under water. As many as 8000 people have been shifted to relief camps.  With the opening of the dam, the government has been watching the situation keenly. A flood is likely to occur in Aluva region.

The water level in Idukki now is 2401 feet. The maximum capacity of the dam is 2403. A red alert was given when the water level touched 2399 feet.

Water is flowing to Idamalayar Dam and so authorities of KSEB have decided not to close the shutter. A decision was taken yesterday to raise the shutter for four hours. As the water level is rising, the shutter was opened till 7 am today.

The shutter of the Cheruthoni dam was last opened in 1992. The shutter was opened for 15 days in 1981 and five days in 1992.
