SIVAGANGA (TN): A 30-year-old history-sheeter, wanted in connection with various cases including murder, dacoity and burglary was shot dead after he attacked a police team when it tried to nab him at Kayanhulam in the district Wednesday, police said.

Police said Karthigaisamy and six members of his gang tried to proceed to their hideout in a car after robbing a petrol bunk in Madurai, following which police put on high alert, Superintendent of Police Jeyachandran said.

Later, two policemen- Murugan and Silabarasan- who chased them on a motor bike tried to stop them. The gang then attacked the former with a sickle, injuring him seriously.

After an intensive search, police spotted the gang at Kayanhulam and asked them to surrender. However the gang attacked the police party following which police opened fire in which Karthigaisamy was killed, Jeyachandran said.

In the melee, other members of the gang managed to escape and an intensive search was on to nab them, Jeyachandran said.
