KALLAMBALAM: A woman, who was set on fire on Friday by her lover after dousing her with petrol, succumbed to the burns on Wednesday. The dead has been identified as Kollam native Ambili (33), who had been staying in a rented house in Kallambalam Seemanthapuram.

In connection with the incident, the police have arrested Kallambalam Kattuchantha Puthusserymukku native Aji. The arrest was carried out by Kaddakkavur CI Mukesh, who is currently holding Varkala CI’s charge, and his team.

The incident happened at Ambili’s friend Chittayikkode native Beena’s house on last Friday at around 6 in the morning. For the past four years, Ambili had been living separated from her husband. During this time, she fell in love with Aji and both along with Ambili’s children shifted to the rented house in Seemanthapuram.

However, Aji started torturing Ambili and her children for trivial reason. She approached police only to know about his criminal background. Though she tried to break up the relationship, Aji began pestering her to marry him.

Ambili went to her friend Beena’s house a week ago with her children Sona and Sonu. Aji went there on Friday and asked her to go with him. When Ambili didn’t obey, he went out, drained out petrol from Beena’s brother’s bike and committed the crime. Ambili was standing in the kitchen when she was attacked. Though she was rushed to Medical College hospital, she died today morning.
