PATHANAMTHITTA: In a bizarre incident, a newborn has been abducted from the maternity ward of district hospital at Kozhencherry on Thursday. According to the police, the four-day-old baby boy of Saji-Anitha couple of Madathumpady in Ranni was reportedly abducted around 11.10 am. Anitha gave birth at 8.30 am on Sunday. The abduction took place when the baby was with its father and grandmother while its mother was taken to the labour room after a minor surgery on Thursday.

The police said the grandmother had left the baby with Saji when she went out for washing clothes. Saji told the police that a woman in her 30s, whom they came across on the hospital premises earlier as the caretaker of another patient, approached him and took the baby to the labour room, saying that the mother wanted to feed the baby on the directions of the nursing staff.

However, the father realized that their baby was abducted only when the nurse came to take the baby to its mother. The police launched a thorough search for the woman following a complaint from the hospital authorities. According to the police, footage captured on the CCTV kept at the ward showed a woman in churidar carrying a baby to the gate and crossing the gate in an auto between 11.12 am and 11.15 am.
