THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes has ordered a probe into the death of a 31-year-old pregnant Dalit woman, allegedly due to medical negligence, a year ago.

The order pertains to the death of Sahitha, who died in May 2016 at the Kottarakkara taluk government hospital where she was admitted after developing labour pain. Alleging medical negligence, the relatives of the deceased allegedly manhandled the gynaecologist who had attended the patient.

In his order, commission Chairman P.N. Vijayakumar directed the Superintendent of Police, Special Branch, Kollam, to inquire into the facts regarding those who were on duty in the gynaecology ward labour room on the particular day and the factors that provoked the mob, leading to destruction of public property.

The inquiry should also include the behavioural pattern and treatment of the doctor to the particular patient.

The District Scheduled Caste Development Officer has been directed to take up the matter with the department for immediate disbursement of financial assistance under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Considering the suo moto case, the commission observed that the Superintendent of Police (Kollam Rural) failed to appear before it despite repeated notices.

The lapse amounted to contempt of the commission under Section 10 (A) of the Commission of Enquiries Act. The official had bequeathed the duty to a subordinate, who in his turn deputed another subordinate.
