THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: At least some of the Trivandrumites must have now become familiar with the soft jazz music that wafts the air as you move down the Museum-Nanthancode road. And that’s Burger Band there, right in front of the Nilgiris super market.
Good food and good music is always a good combination, and Burger Band is just about that.
A quaint little food counter aesthetically made out of bamboos, and a black board displaying the day’s menu would welcome you.
“Veg Burger, Cheese Burger, Chicken Burger…“ read the board as I approached the counter.
Now, the menu is not just about burgers. They also serve other delicacies like Thai Momos, Spanish Omelet, Chinese Chow Mein, and beverages like Mint Cooler, Iced Tea and the lot.
“It was a good day of sales for us but the rush comes in on weekends,” says Mahesh, one of the proprietors of Burger Band.
There’s no dedicated seating arrangement for you to sit and dine but there were a few who were eating out of their cars.
“We never thought about this as a regular restaurant. Besides, most of our customers prefer parcels,” says Mahesh.
A little bit of chit-chat with him made me aware of their mobile counter at the Shanghumugam beach. “As of now, we have a make-shift mini-van serving the customers at Shanghumugam. We have another bigger van, which is now getting painted with our logo and other graphics work,” says Mahesh.
He adds: “There are five of us behind this venture and each one of us are assigned with different duties. One takes care of procuring raw materials for preparing the dishes and he’s also in charge of researching possibilities of introducing newer dishes. The second one takes care of all the branding and maintenance work. The third and the fourth ones are in charge of the two different counters – one at Shanghumugam and the other one here.”
“And then there’s myself who supervises things – the others call me the PRO,” he says with a chuckle.
Though different duties are assigned to each one of them, they are never reluctant to fill in on the other in case of any emergency, like Mahesh was at the Nanthancode counter instead of his friend who took an off because he was under the weather.
“It was not an easy beginning for us. People here, though they are accustomed to pizzas, Dominos and others, were speculative when the bunch of us came up with the idea of a food joint specialising in burgers. It took us a little time to prove to them that we mean what we say, and I’m now happy to see that we have regular customers,” says Mahesh about their initial days.
When quizzed about the jazz-theme, he said: “Well, all of us in Burger Band love music. And jazz is because we wanted to give a chill-out experience that can attract both youngsters as well as families.”
As they are celebrating one year of success in Trivandrum, the group of friends behind this tasty idea is elated to tell us that they are “now spreading the joy to Kollam beach.”
Let’s wish them happier, flavourful days ahead.
