THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet has decided to implement the health insurance scheme for government employees and government pensioners as per the recommendation of the 10th pay revision commission.

The current reimbursement scheme will continue till the health insurance is implemented. Rs 300 will be deducted from the salary of employees every month for the payment of insurance premium.

Pensioners will stop getting Rs 300 as monthly medical allowance and that will be credited towards the insurance premium.  When the insurance scheme comes into existence, interest-free medical loan will be stopped.

The government is now expending Rs 230 crore for medical reimbursement (Rs 70 cr), medical allowance for pensioners (Rs 150 cr) and interest-free medical loan (Rs 10 cr). The government hopes to reduce this financial obligation by implementing the insurance scheme.

For the implementation of the scheme, the government has decided to invite application from insurance companies with IRDA approval. Out of them preference will be given to four public sector companies.

After the implementation of the scheme the beneficiaries will get treatment without paying the medical bill, which will be paid by the Insurance Company through government channels. The insurance will also cover treatment for existing diseases in the beneficiaries at the time of joining the scheme.
