Night ban imposed on the roads leading to Kerala ie.the Gundalpet-Sulthan Batheri(NH-212);Gundalpet-Gudalur(NH-67) and the Antharsanthe -Bavali section of the Mysore-Mananthavady road(SH-33) is causing untold hardships to lacs of people. All these roads pass through the wild Life Sanctuaries of Muthanga,BandipurMuthumalai and Nagarhole for more than 30 KMs. These sanctuaries have been declared Tiger reserves recently and these Sancturies are habitats of several critically endangered species..It is imperative that wild Life,Forest Wealth and Environment be protected and conserved.
Earlier before imposing the night ban on the Mysore-Mananthavady road the Central Empowered committee constituted by the Hon.Supreme Court had suggested to find an alternate road so that Wild Life and Forest areas could be maximum avoided.
We can propose a viable route avoiding the Wild life areas .The existing Mysore-Mananthavady road, if realigned a little to go from Antharsanthe via Karapur-Jaggalli-Machur-Dodda Byranakuppe to reach Bavali, Forest areas could be avoided. Wherever Animal Crossings are there , as they may visit Kabini River to quench their thirst between Jaggalli and Machur within a span of about 3 KMs, Underpasses could be constructed which would not hamper the free movements of wild animals.Already the Bavali-Mysore -Tumkur-Kortagere Road been declared as State highway 33 by the Govt.of Karnataka.If this road is to be realigned as suggested forest area could be avoided.To avoid the wild life and forest areas in Kerala this could be realigned again from Bavali via Shanamangalam,Palvelicham,Payyampalli, to reach Mananthavady.This road could then be upgraded as a National Highway by extending it to Vatakara from Bavali via Mananthavady and to Penukonda near Puttaparthy in Andhra from Korategere . This then would provide unlimited connectivity to entire South India as this would interconnect the NH 17(Kochi-Mangalore-Panvel-Mumbai),NH 48(Bengaluru-Mangalore),NH 4 (Bengaluru-Pune) and NH 7 (Bengaluru-Hyderabad) and the 4 lane Mysore-Bengaluru SH 17.Along side the development of this road the Bridge proposed at Dodda Byranakuppe or Chekadi connecting Sultan Batheri to the Mysore-Mananthavady Road should also be taken up and completed.This road leads to Gudalur and Ooty from Sultan Bathery.
The Proposed Mysore –Kerala Railway line could also be conceived more or less parallel to this road.If it is to start at Kadakaola a Railway station close to the Mysore Airport and proceed to Vatakara or Thalassery via Hullahalli-Sargur-Karapur-Machur-Bavali-Palvelicham-Mananthavady-Kunhome-Vilanagad, the distance of the new lines to be laid would be just 130 KMs and forest and wild Life areas would be less than 3 KMs.This would be the most cost effective and economically and Technically feasible route.Later from Mananthavady another Line could be done to connect Nilambur Via Kalpetta-Meppadi.This line would be another 120 KMs.Thus just within 250 KMs these two Railway lines could be done.At present proposals are there to have two separate lines ie.the Mysore-Thalassery Line which has to pass through the Coorg and Makkutta forest regions and the Nanjangud-Nilambur line which has to cross the Bndipur and Muthanga Wild Life sanctuaries.The Mysore -Thlassery line has to criss cross more than 30 KMs of Forests and the Nanjanagud –Nilambur line has to cross more than 60 KMs of Forests and Wild life areas,as per the current proposals.The cost of these two lines are estimated more than 5800 crores whereas as per our proposal the project may cost less than Rs.1200 crores.
We earnestly hope that the Hon.Supreme Court , the Hon.High Courts of Karnataka and Kerala, would consider these Proposals and would kindly take up with the Surface Transport Ministry,the Railway Ministry and the State Govts. of Karnataka and Kerala and see that these are implemented on a time bound manner so that the hardships of lacs of people could be redressed and the wild life could be effectively protected.These futuristic projects would bring in a permanent solution to the vexed problems of Man -Animal conflicts in this region.
