KOCHI: Traffic in and around the city was badly affected during peak hours of Wednesday morning after a giant tree got uprooted and toppled across the Kochi-Madurai Highway at Maradu east of Abad Nucleus Mall around 5 am, leaving office goers stranded on roads for hours.

While none was hurt, the tree brought down in its wake an electric post of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and the roof sheet of a nearby home besides damaging a part of a nearby ATM counter. Luckily, no moving vehicle came under the tree.

A unit from Thripunithura fire and rescue station, led by station officer K. Shaji, rushed to the spot and it took them almost five hours to clear two giant branches of the fallen tree from the road using chainsaw, rope and ladder. “So much time was needed since care was taken not to damage more electric posts in the process. KSEB contractors reached the spot and took down electric lines to facilitate our rescue operations,” said Shaji.

Traffic through the area was disrupted till the fire and rescue personnel wrapped up their work around 11 a.m., said Thripunithura traffic officials. Vehicles had to be re-routed through Vyttila since there was no other parallel road wide enough to accommodate the diverted traffic. The effect of the traffic logjam was also felt in other arterial roads including Seaport-Airport Road. Infopark employees were one of the worst affected as many of them couldn’t reach office on time.
