KOCHI: Scores of people, including women, were injured when police resorted to lathicharge to disburse the agitators after they tried to barge into the IOC plant being constructed at Puthuvype JanavasaKendram, here Sunday. The agitators were demanding the shifting of the IOC plant.

The trouble started when police asked to disburse the agitating people. Instead of leaving the place, the agitators pelted stones on the police, which prompted the latter to resort to lathicharge.

The agitation turned violent when the police entered the scene to remove those who held dharna in front of the IOC plant. According to agitators, Kerala Fisheries Minister J Mercykuttyamma during her talk with the local people promised that the construction work would be stopped temporarily.

Two days ago, police took large number of people including women, when they organised agitation in the same area.

The people in the area had been conducting agitations for the past several months to shift the plant. The agitators said that the construction of the plant was being carried out after violating the interim order issued by the National Green Tribunal.
