THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 40-year-old man was arrested by the police on Tuesday for allegedly setting ablaze the Balaramapuram grama panchayat office. The incident took place at 3.30 pm when the accused, identified as Shine of Balaramapuram, a PWD contractor, had gone to the office seeking the return of a deposit he had given as surety for the maintenance of a road stretch.

He allegedly ran to the Assistant Executive Engineer’s room and emptied a container of petrol, before going on to set the room on fire. While he was soon overpowered by the employees of the office, Fire & Rescue Services personnel from the Neyyattinkara fire station rushed to the spot to douse the fire.
