THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Punarayi Vijayan has taken to Facebook to say that he was overwhelmed by the kind of resistance put up by the self-respecting Malayalees in the cyber space, against the attempts by the BJP and the RSS to portray Kerala as a strife-ridden state.

He added that these people were not sponsored by the state government or were they asked to voice their opinions but they came forward willingly to defend the reputation of their state against the bad publicity the BJP and the RSS attempted to spread.

“With this joint defence put up by Malayalees, the lies spread about Kerala through social media and through some sponsored mainline publications based out of New Delhi, were crushed one by one. This happened through the natural reactions that came out through social media, and this is truly satisfying,” he said.

He added: “The way Malayalees from across the globe faced the politically driven attempts to belittle the achievements of the state, and to destroy the best democracy in the country, was overwhelming. Not only did the LDF members working in the cyber space but even those who don’t usually intervene in any political matters, and those who have no political affiliations also took part in this.”

He also said that though social media has been instrumental in achieving dynamic results in the field of communication, it is also being misused to spread false news and character-assassinate people, which is a dangerous tendency.

The CM said that the government is ready to support the efforts to prevent the misuse of social media, and added that he wishes a think-tank involving experts in social media needs to be functional to prevent any future threats against the state or individuals.
