ALAPPUZHA: At the end of a fierce race, the Gabriel Chundan from Ernakulam rowed by the Thuruthippuram Boat Club hoisted the 65th Nehru Trophy, after defeating the much competitive Payippad Chundan, Karichal Chundan, and Mahadevikkadu Kattil Thekkethil.

This is the first Nehru Trophy victory for the Thuruthippuram Boat Club.

With the starting system crashing out, the boat race happened late into the evening.

It was through a photo-finish that the victor was decided after a much hard-fought race. The Gabriel Chundan touched the finishing-line at 4.17.42 minutes, followed by Mahadevikkadu Kattil Thekkethil (4.17.72 minutes), Payippad Chundan (4.17.99 minutes), and Karichal Chundan (4.19.00 minutes).

Unlike in previous years, only four of the Chundans that clocked the best timings in the preliminary round were allowed to participate in the final race.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the event on Saturday at 2.00 pm.

For the first time in history, 78 boats took part in the event. The race of smaller boats concluded today morning, and the main Chundan race happened late into the evening.
