THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala has written a letter to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stating that the extra amount taken as fees for NRI seats must be utilised to provide free education for underprevilaged students.

There a total of 397 NRI seats across Kerala, and the Rajendra Babu Committee has decided a fees of Rs. 20 lakhs for each of these seats. Chennithala has suggested taking Rs. 5 lakhs each from all these NRI seats and formation of a fund to provide scholarship for underprivileged students.

“With this you can provide free education to 397 students. Also the condition that in colleges which are still following the four-slab fees structure, an amount of Rs. 11 lakhs can be demanded as interest-free deposit for management seats, needs to be withdrawn. It is cheating to introduce such a condition at the last stage when students are getting admission and getting ready to join the classes. With this the students will have to pay the fees of Rs. 11 lakhs and on top of it, an interest-free deposit of another Rs. 11 lakhs. This would just create another opportunity for the managements to swindle the students off their money.”
