THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala has alleged that the slapping of cut-throat fees on students by the managements of the private medical colleges after signing a deal with the government that they would follow the previous year’s fees structure, was the result of a conspiracy between the government and the managements.

He said that the order by the admissions commissioner for the students to pay Rs. 11 lakhs interest-free deposit, and produce a bank guarantee of Rs. 50 lakhs on top of the Rs. 5 lakhs fees in 85 per cent seats as ruled by the court is quite strange.

He further alleged that when the students back-off from taking admission unable to manage the fees, deposit and the bank guarantee all together, the managements would get those seats, which in turn would be sold out in auction by the management.

He added that the government holding talks with some managements over the previous year’s fees structure, even after the Rajendra Babu Committee decided up on a unified fees structure, was to facilitate this loot by the management.

“They have created confusion even in those colleges that have accepted the unified fees structure. Even if the fees for the 85 per cent seats in those colleges is the unified Rs. 5 lakh, they have segregated those seats as government seats and management seats. Now the students and parents are confused as to which one they should opt for,” he said.
