THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Permission has been granted to open all liquor shops on both sides of National highways at Mahe, which have been lying closed following a Supreme Court order.

The court had ordered closure of all liquor shops within the radius of 500 metre of National highways. Following this, the bars within this distance limit downed their shutters.

But now, Puducherry government has given permission to open bars stating that the order is not applicable to bars in Municipality limits.

The Supreme Court had issued the order on December 15 last, asking the government to shut down all liquor outlets near national highways.

When the liquor vendors in Mahe moved court, seeking grace period, the Supreme Court rejected their petition.
The court said that it will set a bad precedence and it will negate the very essence of the earlier verdict.

In the Mahe region, there are 64 liquor shops. All shops except the three shops on the railway station road now remain closed. Following the permission they will be opened soon.
