KOCHI: A major fire broke out at a shopping complex owned by the Thripunithura municipality. According to Fire and Rescue Services Department officials, the blaze broke out around 2.45 pm, and it took them nearly two hours to douse the flames. “We received a call around 2.55 a.m, following which three fire tenders were deployed. By the time we reached the spot, stock piles of bleaching powder, other inflammable chemicals, and plastic waste dumped inside a room were gutted,” they added.

The flames could not be brought under control immediately. A couple of two-wheelers parked near the building also caught fire. “A few people who were trapped upstairs managed to come down after we pumped water on the stairs,” they added. Residents panicked as smoke and flames emanated from the building amid minor explosions. The cause of the fire and loss of property are yet to be ascertained. Meanwhile, locals alleged there were no proper facilities in the building to handle fire accidents.
