KOZHIKODE: A special squad of the District Police Chief (Kozhikode city) seized unaccounted money to the tune of Rs 99 lakh from two Malappuram natives. Shamsudheen Avaran, 41, and Salman Rayinkutty, 20, were detained by the squad when they were travelling by car to Malappuram.

The police said they intercepted the vehicle near the Kasaba police station as part of a routine check around 9 p.m. The youths were transporting money given by a Kozhikode native. Though both were presented before the Judicial First class Magistrate Court-3 on Sunday, the police could not trace details of the suspicious hawala transaction. The accused had not divulged the source of the cash and for whom they were carrying it to Malappuram, the police said.

On Friday, a youth was nabbed by the police from Perinthalmanna with unaccounted money worth Rs 1.10 crore. Police sources said vehicle inspections had been strengthened in the wake of a spurt in unaccounted money transfers.
