SEOUL: A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea through the Joint Security Area in the demilitarised zone on Monday.

According to the Yonhap news agency, the South Korean military said the soldier suffered a gunshot from North Korean forces while defecting.

Soon after his arrival in South Korea, the soldier was taken to the hospital for treatment.
