THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor P Sathasivam has signed the ordinance by the government that reduced the tenure of the Travancore Devaswom to two years, after considering the explanation given by the government regarding the ordinance’s legal validity.

Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran had visited the governor in person at the Raj Bhavan to explain to him about the legal validity of the ordinance.

The government came out with the ordinance on just one day before the Travancore Devaswom Board headed by Prayar Gopalakrishnan and with Ajay Tharayil as its member completed two years.

The explanation sought from the government regarding the same had asked how it is going to manage it when the Sabarimala pilgrimage season is just three or four days away from beginning. The minister had explained that the reduction in tenure of the devaswom board was done after discussing it at different levels and seeking legal validity for the same.

‘The LDF had reduced the tenure of the devaswom board to two years from four years in 2007 but the UDF had made in to three years again in 2014. Even if we allow the three-year time to the devaswom now, its tenure would end before the next pilgrimage season in Sabarimala begins. Hence the Sabarimala pilgrimage season cannot be considered as a criterion,” said the minister.

The minister also convinced the governor that he himself would directly look after the procedures during the pilgrimage season, besides having a master plan committee under the leadership of justice Sirijagan to do the same.

The criteria for reducing the tenure of the devaswom board and the history behind it were not mentioned in the ordinance submitted with the governor.

Earlier, opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala and BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan had visited the governor and requested him not to sign the ordinance.
