BENGALURU: Former national volleyball coach Achutha Kurup has passed away here on Tuesday morning. He was 75.

He was the coach of the Indian volleyball team that won a Silver in the 1986 Asian Games held in Seoul.

Achutha Kurup retired while playing for the Service and then took coaching lessons. He has served as the coach of Sports Authority of India (SAI). He was also the forerunners who helped in bringing up SAI in Bengaluru.

He became the coach of the Indian team in 1986, and the team won the Silver in the International Friendship Volleyball Championship held in 1989 in Japan.

He was also the coach of the Indian women volleyball team in the 1982 Asian Games held in Delhi, besides being the coach of the Indian men’s team in the 1987 and 1989 South Asian Federation (SAF) Games.

He was also appointed as the coach of the Indian team by the Volleyball Federation in 1988 for the 1990 Asian Games but he had to back off from taking up the responsibility even before 1990 because of his difference of opinion with the Federation.

He is survived by his wife Kusum, who is a native of Punjab, son Anand Kurup and daughter Anuradha.
