         Protest over new-born’s death    
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A protest was held by a group of people at Woman and Child Hospital, Thycaud Saturday morning alleging medical negligence in the death of an infant during delivery.

         Three youths rescued from sea, one missing    
ALAPPUZHA: The police launched a search for a youth, Jithin Daniel, 19, a resident of Haripad, who went missing while taking a bath in the sea near Thottapally Saturday evening. He was part of a group of four friends who went to swim in the sea.

         Sabarimala all set for mast installation    
PATHANAMTHITTA: Sabarimala is all set for the ceremonial installation of the new mast at the Ayyappa temple to be held Sunday. The 12-metre teakwood stem of the temple mast has been covered with gold-covered cylindrical copper drums (‘chembu-para’).

         Tobacco products seized    
KOCHI: In a joint operation, the Railway Protection Force and the Excise Department seized banned tobacco products worth Rs 4.5 lakh and arrested a Tamil Nadu native here on Saturday.

         Farmer found dead outside village office    
KOZHIKODE: A farmer was reported to have committed suicide by hanging himself outside a village office in Kozhikode district on Wednesday night. Kavilpurayidathil Joy, alias Thomas, 57, of Chakkittapara took the extreme step after he was turned away by the staff of the Chembanod village office when he went there to pay land tax, police sources said, quoting his suicide note.

         Ivory, sandalwood seized    
KOCHI: The flying squad of the Forest Department on Wednesday seized ivory and sandalwood allegedly kept for sale in a house at Kadavanthra in the city.

         Excise raids intensified in Alappuzha    
ALAPPUZHA: Over 1,400 persons were arrested by excise authorities during raids conducted in the district during the past six months, excise deputy commissioner has said.

         INA calls indefinite strike across state from June 29    
KANNUR: State president Libin Thomas of The Indian Nurses Association (INA) demanded that State Government should interfere immediately to settle the indefinite strike of around 6000 nurses working in about 50 private hospitals in Thrissur district for the last few days.

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court adjourned to next week the hearing on a petition filed by the jailed PDP leader Abdul Nasir Madhani challenging the final report filed in a case registered against him by the Sasthamcotta police in 1992 under the provisions of the Arms Act and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has commuted the death sentence awarded to a murder accused by the Ernakulam Sessions Court to rigorous life imprisonment.

KOCHI: A Tamil Nadu native, who allegedly murdered his lover at Kakkanad in July 2015, has been arrested by a special team of Kochi City Police from his hideout in Tirupati.

         Murder case: Charge sheet submitted    
KASARAGOD: The Special Investigation Team probing the murder of Mohammed Riyas, a madrasa teacher, submitted the charge sheet before the Judicial First Class Magistrate court here. The police team is headed by Kannur Crime Branch SP A Sreenivas and Taliparamba Circle Inspector P K Sudhakaran.

         Murder attempt: Three held    
KASARGOD: The police have arrested three persons here on charge of attempting to murder a youth a week ago. A police team led by Kasaragod Town Circle Inspector C A Abdul Rahim arrested Khaisal, 28, Habeeb, 22, residents of Anangoor here, and Thajuddin, 26, from nearby Majal, in connection with the murder attempt on Rajesh, alias Raju.

         Child abuse case: Court acquits school van driver    
KOCHI: In a significant judgment, the Ernakulam Additional District and Sessions Court (Cases related to Atrocities and Sexual Violence against Women and Children) has acquitted a school van driver on charges of abusing a four-year-old girl.

         Woman killed in accident    
KOCHI: A 49-year-old woman was crushed to death by a speeding tipper truck near Perumbavoor on Monday. The accident took place on the Aluva-Perumbavoor road when the woman, identified as Beevi of Keezhmadu, accidentally fell on the road and was rammed by the tipper which came from behind.

         Foreign currency seized from Ghana native fake    
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The arrest of a Ghana national with foreign currency notes is being seen by law enforcers as a renewed attempt to lure people from the State with shady business propositions. Khwami Rob Edison, 32, who was apprehended from a private bus at the Amaravila check-post on Sunday, is suspected to be part of a New Delhi-based online racket.

KOZHIKODE: In a major relief to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in the Gulf, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has slashed the fee for their children seeking admissions to NITs (National Institutes of Technology) under the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) from this academic year.

         Youth killed as car rams building    
KASARAGOD: A youth was killed when the car he was driving rammed a roadside building at Anangoor here in the early hours of Tuesday. Muhammed Basith, 24, died on the spot after he reportedly lost control of the vehicle and hit an ESI dispensary building around 2 am. There was drizzle in the area at the time, police sources here said.

IDUKKI: A police team led by Munnar Circle Inspector Abu Abraham seized 4 kg of ganja and arrested one person at Mankulam. The police officers identified the arrested person as Mankulam Kurathikudy colony resident Biju Varghese, 31.
