         Pinarayi writes to Modi on DU admission problems being faced by students    
 
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote letters to both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar in which he expressed his concern over students from his state facing discrimination while applying for admission to Delhi University (DU).

 
         Hashish oil seized, two arrested at Adimaly    
 
IDUKKI: The narcotic special squad, Adimaly, seized 600 grams of hashish oil and arrested two persons at Murickassery. The arrested were Areekunnel Babu, 40, and his brother Sajeev, 36, both residents of Chinnar Nirappu.

 
         Bodies of youths recovered    
 
KALPETTA: The bodies of two of the four youths who drowned in the Banasurasagar reservoir on Sunday were recovered on Wednesday morning. The Padinharethara police identified the bodies as that of Melvin, 34, son of Mathew of Manithodi at Chembukkadavu, near Thusharagiri, in Kozhikode, and Wilson, 47, of Padinharekudiyil at Zinkhona, near Thariyodu.

 
         Student electrocuted    
 
KANNUR: A school student was electrocuted when he accidentally came into contact with a broken live electric line near his school at Peringathur here on Wednesday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An eight-year-old boy was killed after a kitchen slab fell on him at his house in Malayinkeezhu on Tuesday. According to the police, the dead has been identified as Kiran Kumar, who hailed from Nalamkallu in Vilavoorkal.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An ongoing protest against launching an outlet of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (Bevco) in Vizhinjam took a violent turn on Tuesday with one of the agitators allegedly hacking the person who had rented out a building for the outlet.

KOCHI: The safety risk posed by trucks transporting construction materials has once again come into focus with a youth being crushed to death by a speeding tipper truck near Aluva on Monday.

KOCHI: The Eloor police arrested a youth on charges of abusing a minor. The accused was identified as Jaison, 27, a native of Manjummal. He had allegedly abused the victim, a 17-year-old girl, two months ago after promising to marry her.

 
         DCP denies allegation    
 
KOCHI: Yatish Chandra, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kochi City, denied reports of his brutal assault on women and children who were protesting against the Puthuvype LPG terminal project. In a written explanation given to P Mohana Das, Chairman, State Human Rights Commission, the DCP said the police resorted to forcible removal of only those who blocked the road and that too after multiple warnings.

KANHANGAD: A 61-year-old man, charged with duping bank customers of huge sum, was arrested for cheating at least 10 persons here. The man allegedly duped people by assuring them that he would intervene to get the loans they have availed themselves of fully written-off.

 
         Man shoots at son    
 
IDUKKI: A man shot at his elder son with a country gun at their house at Suryanelly. The injured, Binu, has been admitted to a hospital in Ernakulam, said the Santhanpara police. Binu reportedly quarrelled with the wife of his younger brother.

         Illegal constructions removed    
 
KASARGOD: Revenue officials removed illegal constructions at Chooripallam-Palathadukka, near Badiadukka, on government land. On receiving green signal from Collector K Jeevanbabu, a team of officials led by Kasaragod additional tahsildar E. Kunhikannan removed illegal structures using excavators in the locality, about 20 km from Kasaragod close to the Cherkala-Badiadukka road, a senior official said.

 
         Fisherman missing after boat capsizes in sea    
 
KASARAGOD: A 60-year-old fisherman was missing after a boat capsized in strong waves in the sea off the Pallikkare beach near Bekal early on Wednesday. He was identified as Kottan, son of Madhavan, a resident of nearby Thrikkannad.

 
         Woman, son arrested on charge of theft of ATM card    
 
KOCHI: The Aluva police on Wednesday arrested a 46-year-old woman and her son on charge of stealing an ATM card and using it to make purchases worth Rs 9 lakh.

 
         Couple found dead    
 
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A couple allegedly hanged themselves inside their house at Mannanthala in the early hours of Wednesday. The dead are Vineesh (31) and Suchitra (29).

 
         Woman, son found dead in well    
 
THRISSUR: A woman and her six-year-old son were found dead in a well at Kunnamkulam on Tuesday. The deceased were Prema, 45, daughter of Thami of Kunnamkulam and her son Suprin. The police suspect that the woman jumped with the child into the well.

 
         Bail plea hearing adjourned    
 
KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday adjourned to next week the hearing on a bail petition filed by Manikandan, an accused who has been in jail since his arrest in February in the connection with the case relating to sexual assault on the actor.

KASARAGOD: Burglars broke into Sri Shankara Narayana Temple at nearby Shiriya and decamped with temple jewellery estimated to cost Rs 7 lakh. The burglary was noticed by chief priest Naveen Bhat and his assistant Ashokan who reached the temple at 5.45 am on Sunday to perform pujas.

 
         Excise officers injured in attack    
 
KOLLAM: Two Excise officers were injured when an alleged ganja peddler bit them at the Shakthikulangara fishing harbour complex in the city Sunday morning. The peddler, identified as Sajeevan, 49, was later overpowered and arrested. About 100 small packets of ganja and Rs 2,600 in cash, allegedly earned from peddling, were seized from him.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kadinamkulam police have launched efforts to apprehend those who were responsible for a clash at a bar hotel that led to two police officers sustaining injuries.

 
         Gold seized at airport    
 
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs Department seized nearly 1.1 kg of gold from two passengers at the airport early Sunday. The passengers had reached the airport here aboard an Air India Express flight from Abu Dhabi.
